The Slava Memorial Cup is one of the greatest tourney of Russia; it will be held, as ever, at Moscow City Golf Club, February 17 to 19, 2012. The event is in memory of Slava Grinuk (1970-1999), a bridgeplayer. The Muscovite Vladimir Ivanov last year told us the story: Slava’s friends were not bridgeplayers, but, when he died, they dedicated to him a yearly bridge event (read here >>). The format this year has been changed: there are still two tourneys, the Top 8 and the Top 40, but the former has become for teams, whereas last year were both for pairs.
The 40 pairs of the Top 40 will be selected as follow: about ten pairs by invite from the Organizing Committee (the rule states “no more than 1/3”); seven pairs will be selected for their results in the main Russian tourneys; fifteen or more will enter according to their rating in the Russian Bridge Federation. The list of pair tourney players is not available yet.
The eight teams of the Top 8, all invited, will be divided into two groups of four; in each group a complete round-robin qualifier will be played. The best two of each group will play semifinals. The top 8 list is available on official website (click here >>). There are some of the strongest players in the world, including Fantoni, Nunes, Lauria and Versace from Italy, Helgemo and Helness from Norway, Van Prooijen, Drijver, Jasma and Paulissen from The Netherlands.
