Talking about Philadelphia World Championships

leggi in italiano »

The World Bridge Series is a World Bridge Federation event, held every four years since 1962, in which are team and pairs tourneys for all the mankind: from juniors to seniors via open, women and mixed. It’s held in Philadelfia; in 2006 it has been played in Verona.

It has started with mixed pair; after the first (of three) final segment, the best placed Italian pair are 10th of 156: Debora Campagnano-Marco Parrella.

Fulvio Fantoni-Donna Compton are 27th are.

In the preceding article we have given the scoring of the first positions in the final stage (still running). More impressive are the names that aren’t there, playing the plate session:

Sabine Auken, George Jacobs, Sue Picus, Barry Rigal, David Berkowitz, Kate Wei Sender, Antonio Vivaldi, Enza Rossano, Mike Passel, Caroline Lynch, Jimmy Cayne, Gabriella Olivieri, and others: Jeff Meckstroth, , Apel Kowalski, Krzysztof Martens, Bob Hamman…no, sorry: Bob Hamman is playing the final stage with Shawn Quinn, but, having 40%, maybe they would prefer to be in plate session.

Tomorrow will start the Open Team, called “Rosenblum Cup” in memory of Julius Rosenblum (1906-1978), WBF president 1970-1976. Julius Rosenblum has been in Neaples in 1951: he was the np captain of the US team that won the second Bermuda Bowl beating the European champions: the Italians. It happened six years before the establishment of the Blue Team’s Empire. About that match, we also could say that…

Well, back to 2010, Philadelphia. On tomorrow will start the Women Team too, called McConnell Cup. As expected, the name is in homage to a woman, Ruth McConnell (1918-2000). Ruth thought a women championship as important as the Bermuda Bowl: by her the Venice Cup was born in 1974. Now you’d know: was Ruth np captain of US team in that very first Venice Cup? Yes, she was. And did her team win? Yes, they won.

In the following days we’ll have Senior Team, then the “Generali” open and women pairs, etc etc. We’ll tell it in the next days.

Note: “Generali” hasn’t been a captain. It’s “Generali Assicurazioni”, an insurance Company.
