Eleven teams have entered in the Wagar Team. Margareth Wagar (1902-1990) who gives her name to the event, was one of the greatest player of the Usa and of the world, holding the record of victories in National Championships. She was overtaken – maybe – only by Helen Sobel, one of her partners, who also played two Open World Championships. But Helen herself, in her book “Winning Bridge”, recognized Margareth’s superiority.
The favourite teams of this edition were Joel and Westheimer, and, in fact, they are now playing the final.
The Geeske Joel’s Team (Geeske Joel, Tobi Sokolow, Janice Seamon-Molson, Jill Meyers, Sylvie Willard, France; Benedicte Cronier, France) has eliminated Jean Barry (163-86) and JoAnn Sprung (113-49 in three segments).
The Valerie Westheimer Team (Valerie Westheimer, Hjordis Eythorsdottir, Mildred Breed, Shawn Quinn, Jill Levin, Jenny Wolpert) has prevailed over Lynne Schaefer (129-114) and Barbara Sonsini (123-100).
The most noticeable piece of news in 2012’s Wagar is that Jill Levin and Jill Meyers, a great pair, are playing this final, but they are now making great pairs with different partners and in opposite teams: the former is in Joel’s Team with Janice Seamon Molson, whereas the latter plays against her in Westheimer’s Team, with Jenny Wolpert.
