2010’s Europeans: Italy vs Turkey reported by Gluck ( second match)

leggi in italiano »

The second match of the day was against Turkey, whose pairs have gained a good deal of experience in recent years, most notably for one of the pairs playing today, a win at the Cavendish in 2001.

This time we fielded Bocchi-Madala, with Georgie and Antonio making their tournament debut.

After starting out fairly evenly the most interesting board in the early stages was a slam found in both rooms followed by a series of partials where Italy faired slightly better. We played slightly more accurately in the 2nd half where careful play and defence netted us a further 20 imps.

This time I followed Agustin and Norberto, a chance to see the young Madala in action. They were sound without being overly aggressive in 1st and 2nd position and very precise in the competitive auction.

The final result was a win of 56-18 equal to 23-7 to send us climbing back up the rankings.  Our next opponents will Serbia.

The important point to bear in mind in this event is that if you finish in the first six places you win a berth to the next World Championships whether you are in the open, women or the seniors.

Our women were also on show, our girls were out of the blocks beating the always fancied team Austrian team with a score of 54-12 (24-6).

There were some teething problems with viewing the matches on BBO, with an intermittent connection to the Net.  The organisers have assured us that the situation will improve as the tournament progresses.

Italy at 17:35 – Open Italy Vs Serbia, Ladies, Italy Vs Scotland.
