InterCity League Spring 2012 – The 2012 Spring version of this very popular event has just drawn to a close with the new Wales/Ireland  team known as Cardiff United surviving a few scares in the qualifying rounds before narrowly beating the favourites and regular winners Ascoli Piceno in a closely fought final. An early opportunity for Cardiff to make 3NTx by reading the cards and bidding inferences perfectly went begging but a series of part score views delivered a first half lead to Cardiff of just 2 imps.

Very few hands produced significant swings until the biggest swing of 14 imps on board 16,  when Ascoli Piceno reached a thin 5!D only to lose imps when Cardiff “saved” in 6!D on the same hand making on a fortunate !H and !D position.  Another 3NTx opportunity  to make on board 22 was this time taken by Cardiff.

Ascoli Piceno completed the match with a well bid 6NT but too much ground had already been lost and Cardiff ended up 54 – 32 winners.

Many thanks to all the organisers who have made this event so successful.
