As reported by “The News”, Pakistan’s bridge squad Captain Tariq Rasheed Khan cannot enter The Netherlands because of the delay in the issuance of the visa. The problem will be solved in a few days: almost certainly the captain will join the team in Veldhoven next Tuesday. It means that Tariq Rasheed Khan will miss the initial matches of World Championship starting Sunday.

Meanwhile Tahir Masood has been appointed the caretaker captain of the Pakistans’ bridge team consisting of  Rashid-ul-Ghazi Tehsin Gheewala, Tahir Masood, Khalid Mohiuddin and Mubashir Puri.

According to the draws, Pakistan will be taking on Canada, Bulgaria and Sweden on the opening day of the competition while their opponents would be Italy, USA 2 and Egypt the following day.

Pakistan best-ever performance in the World Championship had come way back in 1981 in New York where they lost in the final against USA. In that match Pakistan’s players were Zia Mahmood, Masood Saleem, Nishat Abedi, Nisar Ahmed Khan, Munir Ataullah and Jan-e-Alam Fazli, whereas Russell Arnold, Bobby Lewin, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, John Solondar and Bud Reinhold played in USA team.
