Jimmy Cayne vs Junior InterCity League

leggi in italiano »

Last Thursday a joint venture of Junior InterCity League (JICL) players from team Warszawa and team Puszczykowo played a friendly match against team Cayne. Natalia and Piotr were pitted against Lorenzo Lauria and Jimmy Cayne; at the other table Lukasz and Wojciech (JICL) were facing Rob and Baardolav.

A total of 600 kibs were watching at the table where I was following the match. After 8 boards the prospects for our juniors looked rather dim. Team Cayne had pocketed 20 IMPs, while our juniors found themselves empty handed.

The JICL spectators (including myself) were getting a wee bit nervous.  Then on board 9 team Cayne missed a slam, which was good for 13 IMPs. Was the tide turning? It didn’t seem so as team Cayne gained 9 more IMPs on the next boards.

[Note of Neapolitan Club: the disaster at board 9th didn’t happen at Cayne’s table. Their second pair stumbled on exclusion bid, ending in a 4♠ with the 5-0. The dummy’s last bid, 4♠, was spade void showing.]

Then board 13, another slam, hit the table. Team Cayne ended in 7 heart -1 while Natalia and Piotr bid 6 hearts, making [Again a note need: the same pair again fell on exclusion bid: it had to deny the trump ace for one player, confirming it for the other].

This rendered the score 29-30 IMPs: it was not by more than a single IMP, but our Polish players got ahead!

This did turn the tide. Natalia, Piotr, Lukasz and Wojciech smelled blood. They steadily increased their lead until the next slam (board 26) hit the table. This slam was less fortunate for our Polish juniors: team Cayne bid a slam, the JICL juniors did not. The next, and one but last board appeared. Again a slam, but this time a grand slam. When Natalia and Piotr bid 13 tricks the match was decided.

Well done Natalia, Piotr, Lukasz and Wojciech!

The bar has been put very high for the next matches against team Cayne! Andrea and team Zagreb, good luck to you coming Thursday, same time, same place.

PS If you want to register for the Spring JICL edition (that will be starting the 21st of April), please do so as soon as possible. Last day to register is Tuesday the 12th, but I can’t guarantee that late registrations secure a position, as I can only have a multiple of 6 teams starting.
