Camrose Trophy

The Camrose Trophy (Home International Series), is the yearly championship between the five Countries of Ireland and United Kingdom. It takes place in two complete round robins, each by 32 board matches, to be played in two week-ends. The first part had been played on January at the Hotel Metropole in Lladrindod Wells, Wales; the second part was played at the Park Inn Hotel in Manchester.

To avoid the bye, the Country which hosts the second week-end has the right to enter two teams, then this year there were two English teams, England and English Bridge Union (EBU).

This was the provisional ranking after the first week-end: Republic of Ireland, Scotland, North Ireland, England, EBU, Wales.

After the first week-end, it was surprising the low position of England, usually the strongest or nearly – fifty-one win in seventy editions. In the second week-end, however, the “surprise” vanished as snow in a sunny day.

Before the last round, England was already leading as used, and also English was the second placed (-0,95 VPs), but North Ireland didn’t yet yield (-4,14 VPs). In the very last match, England beat Scotland whereas North Ireland prevailed over EBU, but by 6 IMPs only; not enough.

This was the English Team:

First week-end: Ben Green, John Holland, Norman Selway, Derek Patterson, Brian and Nevena Senior. Npc Simon Cochemé.

Second week-end: Alexander Allfrey, Andrew Robson, Tony Forrester, David Gold, David Bakhshi, Tom Townsend. NPC Ben Green.
