Buffett Cup 2012 – A little of history

The Buffett Cup is a transatlantic challenge between twelve American players and twelve European ones. It will won through the three ways to play: individual, pair and team tourneys. At this moment aren’t yet known the Americans, but the n.p. captain Donna Compton. As already published, the European Team is formed by Fantoni, Nunes; Sally Brock, Nicola Smith, Michel and Thomas Bessis, Von Prooijen, Verhees, Karaivanov, Trendafilov. The n.p. captain is Paul Hackett.

The first part of the story of unofficial transatlantic matches begins in 1930 with the match Culbertson-Buller, won by the former, and ends in Philadelphia, 1976, where the “Colonists” defeated the “Redcoats”. Those matches were all Anglo-American, but two exceptions: a Usa-French in early 1930 (then before the Culbertson-Buller), and another Usa-French in July 1937, when the American Squad rested some days in Paris before to go in Hungary for the World Championship won by the Paul Stern’s Austria Team.

The dawn of the nowadays part of this story was in Dublin, 2006, and the fathers were Paul Hackett with his Manchester Bridge Club, B. J. O’Brien and the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland, and an important sponsor: Warren Buffett. The American businessman last year astonished the world complaining that the poor and middle class pay in the Usa much more taxes than the rich investors manager, and that the inequality caused the loss of millions of workplaces. The Warren Buffett’s new transatlantic challenge is no longer bordered to the old enemies: all the Europe now supports the Britons, but the result is still in favour of the Yankees, who won the editions 2006 and 2010 (Dublin , Cardiff), losing only in 2008 in Louisville. The home factor is worthless so far.
