2014 Opatija EC: Angelini wins Italian Open Trials

Francesco AngeliniThe team sponsored by Francesco Angelini (with Leonardo Cima, Valerio Giubilo, Lorenzo Lauria, Antonio Sementa, Alfredo Versace, and npc Lino Bove) won the Italian Open Trials defeating in the final match the team captained by Aldo Giovanni Gerli (with Matteo Baldi, Nicola Del Buono, Francesco Murgia,  Pierfrancesco Parolaro, Gianni Patelli). Gerli withdrew at the end of round 5/8 where the score was 272-67.

Team Angelini will represent Italy at the forthcoming European Championships in Opatija (Croatia, June21- 2 July, 2014), whereas team Gerli will represent Italy in the 2014 Rosenblum in World Bridge Series (Sanya, China, October 10-26, 2014).

In the semifinals Gerli defetated Cesati by 213-202 and Angelini defetaed Buscaglia by 240-80: Buscaglia withdrew at the end of 4/6 round

The first stage of the Italian Open Trials was held in Salsomaggiore Terme (Parma) from 31st of January – 2nd of February 2014 . The second stage was held from 13-15 of February in the same venue.

Curiosity. The winning team’s sponsor, Mr Angelini, had never played. However, due to the opponent teams withdrawal, Angelini acquires the right to play in the national open team.
